About

I'm a mom.  I sell antique and vintage clothing, vintage costume jewelry, and I enjoy cooking ... and eating.

Having always loved to bake, I made it a tradition in my family to bake a personalized birthday cake for my children.  I love doing it and the kids go crazy.  Every year, a new cake, decorated with whatever "theme" they were into at the time - from Big Bird, to Barney,  Thomas the Tank Engine, T-Rex,  baseball, hockey, NASCAR ....

A couple of the cakes came out really well, in particular Big Bird, Barney, and the T-Rex.  The others, in all likelihood, were marginal.

Nonetheless, when the first of my offspring announced his engagement he followed the announcement with a request that I make their wedding cake to help save money.  O M G!  If Barney's belly is misshapen, we'll get over it.  If a wedding cake looks like it came out of the Fun House, there's going to be a problem.

After much ado, reluctantly, I agreed -- WITH a stern warning that I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING!

A few months later the second offspring announced his engagement … well, you know what happened.

Fearful of horrid results, I started to practice by making cupcakes.  The first went to a little dinner party.  Just white cupcakes with white frosting out of the can.  I decorated them little colorful , simple flowers.

And the crowd went wild.

Hmmm … I might just be able to pull this off.

Then  …. Serendipity.  Driving along one day on my way home from the gym (gotta keep from turning into a cupcake) I passed our small town bakery where their sign offered cake decorating classes.  Needless to say, I turned around and signed up right then and there.

Our first lesson was decorating cupcakes with seasonal themes.  I was at the head of the class.  The other students hated me.  I had to admit to them that I'd dabbled in cake decorating so I thought it was time to learn how to do it right, particularly in light of the impending weddings.  The second lesson was decorating a cake and making the frosting roses.  That's about the time the rest of the class caught up with me.  Floppy roses.  Oh well … I had a year to get it right.

Kicking wedding cake ideas around with the first bride-to-be, I tossed out the idea of cupcakes.  After all, they're all the rage at the moment and since the family is bringing all the food for the reception it would mean that no one had to stand there and cut the cake.  Self serve!  She thought about it awhile and decided that would be perfect.

So now you know.

And as of right now, the wedding is only a couple of months away.

I kept a diary, sort of notes, so I would remember what worked, what didn't , took pictures so I'd remember and then I realized I had been actually doing a blog but without anyone to make suggestions, cheer me on, or throw frosting at.

I'll be getting the "diary" up to date and then I'll just keep going.  Honestly, I'm having too much fun to stop!
